A leading Cambridgeshire animal hospital has secured a prestigious national environmental accolade.

Linnaeus-owned DWR Veterinary Specialists, near Six Mile Bottom, has been awarded silver accreditation by Investors in the Environment (iiE), a nationwide initiative which encourages businesses to introduce cleaner, more sustainable and environmentally friendly ways of working.

Among the raft of green measures introduced by DWR to achieve the prestigious award was the implementation of a process to significantly reduce medication waste across the hospital and the creation of a travel policy to understand and manage the hospital’s environmental impact associated with travel.

The iiE was also keen to highlight the silver accolade was achieved as the animal hospital underwent a major expansion programme but still drove down the consumption of electricity and isoflurane gas, while also fostering great team engagement.

Meanwhile, a key member of DWR’s ‘green team’ has undertaken the iiE Green Champion course and Carbon Literacy Training to support them within their role and also share knowledge across the team.

Speaking on behalf of the ‘green team’ at DWR, Gemma Reeve, head of clinical governance, said: “When it comes to sustainability it is important that we back up our words with actions as we recognise the need for the business to be as environmentally friendly as possible.”

Further green initiatives at DWR include greatly improving communication with internal stakeholders, which has seen staff engagement grow over the last year.

Gemma added: “We’re very proud to have achieved silver accreditation by Investors in the Environment but we won’t stop here and will continue to look for ways to further reduce our environmental impact.”

DWR Veterinary Specialists offers specialist-led care in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, diagnostic pathology, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, interventional radiology, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, physiotherapy and soft tissue surgery.
