Two specialist vets at one of the UK’s top animal hospitals have spoken of their pride and passion for the profession after being appointed Heads of Service.

Diagnostic imaging specialist Naomi Earley and Felipe Marquez Grados, a specialist in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia, now lead their respective disciplines at Linnaeus-owned Wear Referrals in Bradbury, County Durham.

Their promotions to leadership roles underlines Wear’s commitment to excellence across its multidisciplinary hospital, with both delighted to be able to help spearhead the hospital’s constant evolution.

Felipe said: “I feel flattered, honoured and very, very happy to be able to help the team in this way.

“However, I do also feel the responsibility implied, both towards the members of the Anaesthesia department as well as to the rest of our colleagues in the other services.

“My goals are very focused in ensuring our department gives the best service to the patients and the hospital while giving my colleagues in the Anaesthesia service the best experience working here.

“I really want the department to feel like a family, and for everyone in it to feel happy and looked after.”

Naomi continued: “It is a privilege to be promoted to Head of Service and I feel it shows that the senior leadership team recognise the work that we have put in and success we have had in establishing an indispensable imaging department.

“This also endorses our vision to grow the team and the services we can offer. It is an exciting time and we would be pleased to hear from any enthusiastic colleagues interested in joining this warm, collaborative team.”

Hospital director Darren Stubbs said: “We’re delighted to see Felipe and Naomi appointed to head of service positions.

“Both have been incredibly valuable members of our team for some time now and their promotions to these leadership roles means they will be able to further help us continue to provide the very highest level of care and treatment to our patients.”

Both Naomi and Felipe said their childhood dreams were to become vets and have spoken of the joy they feel in making a difference in the lives of sick and injured pets.

Naomi said: “One recent case stands out and is very much a good example of why I became a vet. A three-month-old golden retriever puppy had been taken to its primary care practice, who had phoned our medicine team for advice on a radiograph (X-ray) they had taken.

“I could see that the puppy's stomach was in its chest, a life-threatening condition called a gastrothorax, so we made arrangements to see the puppy immediately.

“Unfortunately, it arrested on arrival but thankfully it was successfully resuscitated and, because we knew the diagnosis from the imaging, it had immediate and successful surgery.

“I was proud to play an important role in what was an amazing team effort and somewhat miraculously the dog was discharged the following day!”

Felipe described another recent life-saving intervention at Wear, saying: “A very young puppy came to us with a rare congenital lung malformation that was not allowing her to breathe normally.

“It was a very severe condition that needed urgent surgical correction as she was already very poorly.

“It was a challenging anaesthetic during the diagnostics and surgical correction, followed by some crucial hours in recovery, however the next morning she was already sitting up in her oxygen kennel, wagging the tail and just wanting to play and give cuddles.

“It’s cases like this that make you fall in love with this profession.”

Wear specialises in providing expert multidisciplinary care, including anaesthesia, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, intensive care, internal medicine, neurology, OOH emergency and critical care, oncology, orthopaedics and soft tissue, as well as an in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation service.
