DuOtic Otic Gel For Otitis Externa Now Available
Dechra has launched DuOtic otic gel, the first licensed steroid and antifungal combination for the treatment of otitis externa in dogs associated with susceptible strains of Malassezia pachydermatis.
DuOtic features the active ingredients terbinafine 10 mg and betamethasone 1 mg to help reduce the unnecessary use of antibiotics for yeast-only otitis externa. This is in line with best practice guidelines, which include performing ear cytology for every otitis externa case.
Previewed at the London Vet Show (LVS) in November 2025, DuOtic has been welcomed by UK vets, with 85% of those questioned stating that they will be using DuOtic and a third stating that it will be their preferred choice for managing relevant otitis cases1. The key benefits highlighted by vets in making DuOtic their product of choice were DuOtic being antibiotic-free (84%), long-acting (65%) and innovative (50%)1.
DuOtic is easy to administer in pre-measured single dose 1.2 g tubes to ensure the right dose is applied every time. One tube of the long-acting gel should be applied per ear canal by a vet and repeated after seven days, providing a second chance to discuss primary disease and long-term management with the owner during the consultation. The tube also features a flexible, soft tip that is gentle on a dog’s ears.
Dechra hosted an Otitis Externa Symposium in January 2026 which attracted an audience of 80 UK vets and vet nurses. The conference highlighted the benefits of the company’s extensive product range as well as the latest developments in canine otitis externa, practical strategies, holistic care and responsible antibiotic use.
Following the symposium, 100% of the delegates surveyed stated that they were likely to use DuOtic in practice and Dechra has highlighted the following otitis externa guidelines as a result of the conference:
- Cytology is an absolute necessity as it guides treatment selection
- Effective otitis management means identifying all contributing factors and using a two-phase treatment plan – induction followed by long-term maintenance
- Success in yeast-only otitis cases relies on clear communication with dog owners
- Antibiotics should be used sparingly, in line with antimicrobial stewardship principles
- DuOtic aligns with best practice veterinary guidelines and Dechra’s antimicrobial stewardship and sustainability goals
"DuOtic has been available in Ireland and Northern Ireland for some time and feedback from vet professionals has been positive, both logistically as no refrigeration is required, but also practically as dog owners have appreciated the product being vet-applied, reducing the stress associated with treatment,” comments Jamie Walker MA VetMB MRCVS, veterinary technical manager at Dechra. “Some owners also appreciated the targeted nature of the treatment in the broader context of antimicrobial stewardship.”
Dechra has a cytology webinar series on Dechra Academy to bring vet professionals up to speed on ear cytology. The case study modules will help build confidence in cytology and topics covered include performing an otoscopy, sampling, preparing slides and comparing normal and abnormal findings.
