A leading Yorkshire animal hospital, which recently marked its fifth birthday, is celebrating its growing success by highlighting its high staff retention rate since opening its doors.

With Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM) in May, Linnaeus-owned Paragon Veterinary Referrals in Wakefield can claim to have no fewer than 14 nurses, one specialised patient care assistant and a theatre technician who have been with the hospital since the state-of-the-art facility opened, as part of an ever-expanding team.

In fact, the total years of experience for the nurses being at Paragon from the start is 158.

The roll-call of nurses who have been with Paragon since it opened are Louise Bardon, Lydia Barry, Kirsty Clark, Jo Knott, Sam Lewis, Alison Mann, Faye Newton, Katie Roberts, Helen Sorby, Rebecca Williams, Becky Purnell, Molly Firth, Hannah Holmes and Billy Slater, along with patient care assistant Kelly Davenport and theatre technician Jasmin Douthwaite.

Among those who say excellent support and career development opportunities are some of the key reasons they have progressed their careers with Paragon is Becky Purnell, head of nursing services.

Becky said: “My own development within Paragon as a veterinary nurse is a typical example of how our colleagues are encouraged to excel within their working environment.

“I went from being a surgical nurse, to surgical team leader, then clinical nursing lead, and now I’m head of nursing services.

“Of course, our patients are central to everything we do and we are always striving to give them the highest standard of care, constantly re-evaluating the care that we provide to ensure it is the best. Our hospital is definitely something to be very proud of.”

Paragon was the first referral centre to be opened by Linnaeus and is one of the largest and best-equipped animal centres in the UK.

Clinical director Sophie Adamantos said: “Paragon has come a long way in just five years and this is in no small part due to our amazing nursing and patient care assistant team, whether they’ve been with us from the start or are newer recruits.

“It’s fantastic so many colleagues feel that Paragon is where they want to work. While it’s an amazing facility, it’s the first-class team, career development opportunities and supportive culture which also ensures people want to stay with us.”

Paragon provides expert care in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
