Three veterinary professionals from a Wellington animal hospital are joining others in a marathon with a difference to raise funds for a good cause.

Head of nursing services Bryony Gilder, head of specialist services Will McFadzean and anaesthesia nurse Sophie Puzey from Linnaeus-owned Cave Veterinary Specialists will be among those carrying a 90kg sandbag, also known as a ‘worm’, on the 26.2-mile course along the Grand Western Canal on July 22.

All three are members of Spartan Chamber, an independent gym in Wellington, which is organising the fundraising event in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The marathon involves teams of 10 carrying the 90kg worm and rules stipulate that the teams of 10 can interchange who is carrying the worm as they wish but they must not put the worm down at any time meaning three people are carrying the worm at all times.

Bryony said: “It’s going to be a tough challenge but one that we’re up for. Cancer Research UK is a great cause as cancer touches the lives of so many people, including members at the gym.”

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading independent cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research, influence and information.

Bryony added: “We’d encourage as many people as possible to make a donation. Every penny can make a difference, every penny can possibly save a life from cancer.”

Those wishing to make a donation can visit the Spartan Chamber JustGiving page.

Cave offers comprehensive, specialist-led services in anaesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, orthopaedic surgery and soft tissue surgery.
