Three veterinary professionals from a Wellington animal hospital have helped raise more than £7,000 for a cancer charity when they took part with others in a marathon with a difference.

Head of nursing services Bryony Gilder, head of specialist services Will McFadzean and anaesthesia nurse Sophie Puzey from Linnaeus-owned Cave Veterinary Specialists teamed up to help raise the money.

The trio were among those from Spartan Chamber, an independent gym in Wellington, who carried a 90kg sandbag, also known as a ‘worm’, on a 26.2-mile course along the Grand Western Canal.

The marathon, which was completed in a very creditable eight hours, involved teams of 10 carrying a 90kg worm.

Rules stipulated the teams could interchange who was carrying the worm but that they must not put the worm down at any time, meaning three people were always carrying the heavy load.

Bryony said: “The great thing about this challenge was that it could not be done alone and was a true test of teamwork.

“It’s safe to say friendships were forged overcoming this shared challenge and the support from those surrounding us was second to none.”

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading independent cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research, influence and information.

Bryony added: “It was physically and mentally challenging, made worse by the rain, but a great sense of achievement at the finish.

“The drive to complete the distance was also helped by knowing that we were raising such a large amount of money for a cause that will likely impact us all in some way through our lifetimes.”

Those wishing to make a donation can visit the Spartan Chamber JustGiving page.

Cave offers comprehensive, specialist-led services in anaesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, orthopaedic surgery and soft tissue surgery.
