The MP for East Surrey has praised a state-of-the-art animal hospital after a guided tour of the renowned veterinary centre.

Conservative MP Claire Coutinho visited Linnaeus-owned North Downs Specialist Referrals (NDSR) in Bletchingley for a tour of the impressive facility, which helps lead the care of sick and injured animals across the south of the country.

It was Ms Coutinho’s first visit to a referral veterinary centre and the MP said she was incredibly impressed by NDSR’s expert team and excellent facilities.

She said: “I was blown away by the fantastic facilities at NDSR. I grew up in a family of doctors, so I often feel right at home in hospitals – and it was fascinating to see how a dedicated animal hospital works.

“I had heard great things about NDSR, but the size of the facility and the quality of care shown by their staff was truly impressive.

“Getting to see behind the scenes and meet all the patient care assistants, nurses, vets and specialists (and dogs) was a real privilege and it was clear my constituents’ pets are in safe hands.”

During her tour, Ms Coutinho was able to talk with the specialist cardiology team as they performed a cardiology exam on a dog called Bertie. She was also able to see a team prepare pets for theatre while also learning about what it takes to become a registered veterinary nurse and a patient care assistant.

NDSR hospital director Gerry Polton said it was a pleasure to show Ms Coutinho around the hospital.

He said: “We were so thankful Claire took the time to come and visit us to see firsthand what we do for dogs and cats, not just locally but also from much further afield.

“After our tour, Claire told me just how obvious it was to her how much our team cares about pets and just how much they care about each other, which made me feel overwhelmingly proud.

“It was wonderful also to welcome someone who obviously takes an interest in the people who live and work in the constituency and who was keen to learn about the specialist care we have on offer.”

NDSR offers specialist-led services in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dentistry, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery and spinal surgery.
