VS and the Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance (VOA), supported by Zoetis, hosted an Osteoarthritis training day at the NEC in Birmingham on the 13th of October at the launch of a national project to develop and enhance osteoarthritis management across CVS practices.

45 vets from 35 CVS practices had identified osteoarthritis (OA) as the key clinical area their practice team wanted to develop over the next 18months.

Kathryn Patel, organising the day on behalf of CVS, said “This project is an exciting opportunity to review the use of multi-modal management and individual treatment planning for osteoarthritis cases, including development of nurse mobility clinics. Recent research has illustrated the need for increased support of OA-affected pets and their owners and we are proud that so many CVS practices have recognised this and made improving case management their clinical focus this year.”

Orthopaedic Specialists, Prof John Innes and Professor Stuart Carmichael led discussions on a variety of topics including diagnosis of OA, management of chronic pain and the use of clinical metrology, such as LOAD scoring to monitor patients longer-term. Surgical decision-making was also discussed.

Professor Stuart Carmichael, VOA Director said: “VOA’s aim is to provide access to the latest research, evidence and technologies and facilitate a multi-professional collaboration supporting practices wishing to improve their management of osteoarthritis. We have developed theoretical and practical training to improve OA management in clinical practices”.

Carmichael added: “This is the start of a longer-term partnership between the VOA and CVS, with a Memorandum of Understanding outlining our shared ambition to improve OA management”.

CVS practices participating in this project will become eligible for accreditation by the VOA in recognition of the training they have undergone. The goal is to improve the care of OA patients by engaging the whole practice team and clients in their pets’ care.

Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance (VOA) has a practice accreditation which is available to any practice. Further is available at: https://vet-oa.com/
