A Gloucestershire vets is celebrating after receiving national recognition for its environmental work and drive to cut its carbon footprint.

Folly Gardens Veterinary Clinic, which is based in Tewkesbury and has practices in Cheltenham and Bishops Cleeve, has been awarded bronze accreditation by Investors in the Environment (iiE), a nationwide initiative which encourages firms to introduce cleaner, more sustainable and more environmentally-friendly ways of working.

Led by the practice’s dedicated green team, Linnaeus-owned Folly Gardens has introduced a raft of measures to reduce energy use and cut its reliance on single-use items.

Sustainability champion Megan Archer said: “At Folly Gardens, we are delighted to have gained our bronze accreditation from the iiE, especially as it’s within a year of joining the Linnaeus family. The support from key associates at Linnaeus has been invaluable in helping to get us over the line.

“The iiE award has enabled us to go from a desire to reduce our contribution to climate change to understanding our own carbon footprint and formulating an action plan to get us there in reality.

“Measuring our usage of electricity, gas, water, fuel and, above all, anaesthetic gases, which make up 39 per cent of our carbon footprint, has been key to help reduce our impact.

“Until we started this process, most of us within the practice would see recycling and turning off lights as all we could do to ‘be green’. Now, we are fanatical about reducing our anaesthetic gases and, in doing so, our use of capnography has increased, as well as cutting our co2 emissions.

“The iiE bronze award is just the beginning for us, having a baseline of data can give us encouragement as we continue to reduce our usage.

“Last summer, we also left an area of grass outside the practice uncut and the team could sit out on their breaks surrounded by wildflowers and butterflies.

“We are now introducing more initiatives, as we swap to more reusables within surgery to reduce our waste and look at the wider impact of our operations, with exciting environmental plans on the horizon.”

Folly Gardens Veterinary Clinic boasts an excellent, experienced team of vets and qualified veterinary nurses working in modern facilities with the latest diagnostic tools and technology.
