Nettex Equine is urging horse owners to be on the front foot in preventing mud fever this winter.

Nettex has worked closely with veterinary professionals to produce the Winter Warriors Top Tips guide offering clear, expert advice on how best to manage horse’s lower legs and feet in challenging winter conditions. The guide can be found both online and in store at retailers.

Mud fever is a common winter complaint, often the result of horses standing in wet and muddy conditions which damages the natural protective barrier of skin. It can develop into a painful and difficult to manage condition, which is why Nettex is promoting good leg management as we head into the muddy months.

Nettex’s marketing manager, Nia Williams, explains “Mud can cause some serious conditions, such as mud fever and thrush, so a good care regime is crucial. Yet, it only takes a quick google search to see how much conflicting advice exists on leg care throughout winter. We’ve worked alongside veterinary professionals to provide up to date advice to help equine care givers manage their horse’s legs and feet in the best possible way.”

The Winter Warriors Top Tips guide is accompanied by advice from equine vet Dr Jim Rawlinson. Jim recommends limiting the use of cold water when washing legs, which he recognises as a common mistake horse owners make during winter.

“The constant chilling and wetting of legs are a contributing factor for the development of mud fever. If you need to wash legs, use warm water and a clean towel to dry thoroughly. Better still, leave the mud on the legs when you bring your horse in – bandage the legs overnight while in the stable, so the mud dries and in the morning brush the mud away. You want to avoid making the legs wetter and colder at all times.”

To assist horse owners in optimum leg management, Nettex Equine has a range of Winter Warriors mud-care products which include: Seven Day Mud Away, Equine Veterinary Surgical Scrub, the Muddy Marvel products – De-Scab, Disinfect, Barrier Cream, and Traditional Pig Oil. Furthermore, there is a handy 10% discount on the range throughout December and January*.

The Winter warriors Top Tips guide and accompanying advice from Dr Jim Rawlinson can be found online at www.nettexequine.com, across the Nettex social media platforms, and displayed in store at participating retailers.

The full Winter Warriors range is stocked in tack shops and country stores nationwide. The range is also available from many online stockists. For more information on where you can find the range visit www.nettexequine.com, contact [email protected] or call 01283 524222.
