A new inpatient care course for referral and primary care nurses has been launched by veterinary group Linnaeus.

The programme covers a range of topics, which include infectious diseases and barrier nursing, caring for patients with intravenous catheters, assisted feeding, pain assessments, stress management, and clinical audits. It is open to established referral nurses, those who have just started working in a referral setting, and experienced primary care nurses.

Alison Mann, Professional Development Manager at Linnaeus, commented:

“Our new inpatient course aims to equip nurses with the skills and knowledge to provide excellent care to patients who are hospitalised for diagnostics and interventions. Its content has been developed with peers across several Linnaeus sites to ensure it covers the wide range of requirements within our practices and hospitals.

“We’re excited to be launching this inpatient care course to support nurses at Linnaeus with their career progression and personal development. Fully utilising our fantastic team of nurses builds their confidence and skills, while helping our clinical teams to become as effective as possible.”

The course, which lasts until June, comprises a series of recorded webinars and a virtual attendance day. Attendees will be tested on their knowledge and asked to produce four reflective patient care reports to pass the course.

Victoria Knott, Lead RVN at Southfields Veterinary Specialists in Basildon, has just moved into referral nursing after spending 10 years in primary care. Having signed up for the course, she said:

“This programme will help me to ensure I have a strong foundation of knowledge for caring for inpatients at a referral practice. Having access to a range of case studies will help consolidate my learning and demonstrate how to use my skills in practice.

“I hope the training will give me the confidence to deal with more referral cases, deliver the best care to inpatients and share my learning with others. I am excited to get started.”

The course is part of a series of new training programmes to be introduced at Linnaeus in 2023. It is followed by a feline-friendly course for all practice and hospital teams, which starts this month (March 2023). The online modular training comprises nine hours of CPD and focuses on building a feline-friendly practice environment.
