New Science Selective Joint Care Supports Joint Health And Mobility In Small Pets
Supreme Petfoods has expanded its Science Selective Care supplement range with the launch of Joint Care - a new formulation developed to support mobility and comfort in rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. Containing glucosamine, rosehip, echinacea, and vitamin C, the supplement has been developed in response to growing clinical awareness of osteoarthritis (OA) as a significant yet underdiagnosed condition in small mammals.
In rabbits, OA is increasingly recognised as a common cause of chronic pain and reduced quality of life. A retrospective study identified osteoarthritic lesions in 40% of domestic rabbits, with prevalence strongly correlated with age and body weight.¹ While definitive prevalence data in guinea pigs is lacking, OA is considered to be common in this species as well.²
Molly Varga, RCVS recognised exotics specialist, emphasises the importance of early intervention, saying “Signs of joint pain are often subtle or masked in prey species. Proactive use of nutritional supplements like Science Selective Joint Care can help maintain mobility and may delay progression. Nutritional support, combined with appropriate husbandry and veterinary care, can make a real difference to long-term quality of life.”
Science Selective Joint Care contains a blend of ingredients. Glucosamine is included for its role in helping to support joint health and is widely used due to its favourable safety profile. Glucosamine may also help slow cartilage degeneration when used early in the disease process.2
Joint Care also contains rosehip, a botanical with anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective properties and echinacea, which has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunomodulatory activity.3,4 Vitamin C, an essential nutrient for guinea pigs and beneficial for rabbits, contributes to normal collagen formation and may help protect joint tissues from oxidative stress.
Interest in nutritional supplements for small pets is steadily increasing, particularly among owners managing age-related or chronic conditions. Claire Hamblion, Marketing Director at Supreme Petfoods, says, “With 45 percent of pet owners now regularly purchasing supplements for their animals,5 the demand for clinically relevant, species-appropriate products is growing. We work closely with veterinary and nutrition experts to ensure our formulations meet emerging needs and Joint Care reflects that commitment.”
The Science Selective Care Supplements range also includes Digestive Care, Skin & Coat Care, Urinary Care, Vitamin C Care. Calm & Relax Care and Early Years Care. Like the rest of the range, Joint Care is free from added sugar and highly palatable, supporting easy daily use. Available in 100g packs, the supplements have a recommended retail price (RRP) of £6.99 and are suitable for rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas.
