Norbrook has announced changes to the packaging of its range of anthelmintics – providing new classification labels to support the sustainable use of wormers.

The company is implementing the addition of classifications to their packaging to ensure farmers, vets and SQPs can easily identify which group of active molecule each product contains, in order to use wormers appropriately.

Leigh Sullivan, Large Animal Product Manager at Norbrook, says: “We want to ensure we are helping to delay the development of resistance and preserve optimum animal performance.”

The new packaging is in line with Norbrook’s support of SCOPS (Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep), and the organisation’s drive to promote greater awareness of products, classifications, and the importance of group rotation to delay development of resistance.

Independent sheep consultant and SCOPS group member, Lesley Stubbings, says the new labels will help to increase awareness of the active ingredients present in each wormer product.

“The correct product should be administered at the right dose at the right time, to provide good worm control and also help slow the development of anthelmintic resistance,” says Ms Stubbings. “The more information we can provide the better, so that optimum animal performance is ensured.”

The new classification labels are colour coded circles, as outlined in the VMD guidelines, which are associated with the various anthelmintic groups:  Benzimadazoles (Group 1 - white); Levamisoles (Group 2 – yellow); and Macrocyclic Lactones (Group 3 – clear).

Norbrook’s range of anthelmintics includes: Parafend (white); Levacide (yellow); and Noromectin (clear). The full range of Norbrook anthelmintics is available from veterinary surgeons and agricultural trade merchants.
