The team at a Surrey-based animal hospital has gone above and beyond for charity by completing the Route 66 virtual challenge last month.

The team at North Downs Specialist Referrals (NDSR), an internationally-acknowledged centre of excellence for specialist veterinary care based in Bletchingley, travelled a whopping 4,287 miles, almost double the distance required of the challenge, raising £1,446 for Kent-based charity, Last Chance Animal Rescue.

Nicola Kulendra, NDSR’s European specialist in small animal surgery, said: “It has been such a wonderful and rewarding experience to work together in completing this challenge for a cause that is close to many of our hearts.

“As part of the challenge, each team member made a record of every time they completed a distance-based exercise such as running, walking, cycling or swimming that helped advance us on the Route 66 map. Each member of the team was extremely committed to the cause with some even going up to 60/80 miles a week!

“I am incredibly proud that together we were able to smash the distance required of the challenge, running, cycling, swimming and walking the equivalent of the distance from NDSR in Bletchingley to Nigeria or New Delhi!

“We hope that our efforts will help the charity to continue providing a safe and loving environment to these deserving animals.”

Last Chance Animal Rescue is a registered rescue organisation which aims to rescue and re-home unwanted and abandoned animals. It takes in mainly vulnerable dogs, cats and rabbits, and provides them with the necessary medical care, food, shelter and love before ultimately finding them new homes.

Jenny Mansfield, centre manager at Last Chance Animal Rescue, said: “We are incredibly thankful to the team at NDSR for their incredible effort in raising such a large sum of money for our charity.

“During lockdown, there was a dip in the number of animals at our facility but that number is very rapidly increasing, especially in the last few weeks.

“The money raised by NDSR is very timely and much-needed to get the supplies such as food, treats, water that these animals need and also to help with paying bills including electricity.”
