There’s a crystal-clear new year plan in place at one of the North West’s leading veterinary hospitals to expand its expert surgical team.

Linnaeus-owned Northwest Veterinary Specialists (NWVS), in Sutton Weaver, Cheshire, has appointed clinician Ed Crystal, who’s just completed a residency in small animal surgery at the University of Liverpool.

Ed will join NWVS’s growing surgical team in February to further enhance the hospital’s ability to deliver the highest quality of care to its animal patients.

Ed said: “I’m really looking forward to joining the expert team at Northwest and working within a busy, multi-disciplinary environment.

“I’m expecting to deal with a variety of surgical cases, particularly orthopaedics, and the aim is always the same - to deliver the very best treatment to improve the animal's quality of life and longevity.”

Ed cites his most memorable case as a classic example of how vets can make such a difference in a pet’s life.

He added: “My most memorable case was a young Beagle that had followed a scent down a fox hole and been attacked by two foxes, one at its head and one at the back.

“When the patient presented they had a dozen wounds, the largest of which was on their head and gone straight through its ear canal.

“They were in hypovolaemic shock when they first came in and became septicaemic and then developed DIC the following day.

“It was a challenging case and looking after them was a long, slow process. They stayed with us for several weeks and underwent many operations but eventually made a recovery, albeit with one entire ear missing!

“It was so rewarding and I really enjoy those sorts of cases because, once treatment is over, the patient can return to a normal quality of life.

“That’s why I’m now studying to become a specialist. I want to make even more of a difference so I’ll be sitting my European College of Veterinary Specialisation exams in 2024.”

Away from work, Ed plays bass and flute in a covers band, is a huge football fan and Reading supporter, and enjoys visiting and photographing historical sites with his wife Jo and Border Terrier Macey.

Northwest Veterinary Specialists (NWVS) is one of the UK’s leading specialist-led animal hospitals. It offers care in anaesthesia and analgesia, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
