North Downs Specialist Referrals animal hospital has been recognised as outstanding in four awards by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

As a statutory regulator, the RCVS carries out assessments of practices across the country, with vets able to apply for accreditation at different levels depending on the services offered.

Bletchingley-based North Downs, which is part of the Linnaeus Group, achieved outstanding status in Team and Professional Responsibility; Client service; Diagnostic service; and In-patient service.

The diagnostic services award recognises the hospital’s services in terms of the use of diagnostic techniques such as radiography and ultrasound, along with training and safety measures in place.

The role of veterinary nurses is highlighted with the in-patient service award, which also focuses on factors such as facilities and care of hospitalised animals.

The team and professional responsibility award allows practices to demonstrate they have systems in place to make sure the welfare and safety of staff is paramount and their knowledge and training is up-to-date, while the client service award acknowledges excellence in client experiences.

In order to be designated as outstanding in any award, a practice needs to achieve scores of more than 80 per cent during an RCSV assessment.

Terry Emmerson, Hospital Director, RCVS and European Recognised Specialist in Small Animal Surgery at North Downs, said: “The team here take great pride in providing the highest possible level of care for our patients and clients, often using cutting-edge techniques.

“We have some hugely experienced and talented specialists, nurses and support teams who are all committed to ensuring we continue to provide the highest standards possible.

“We’re very proud the hospital has been awarded outstanding status in all four categories we entered and it’s a wonderful testament to the dedication of everyone involved.”

North Downs is in the process of extending its facilities by up to 25 per cent. The expansion will see added consultation rooms, extra theatre and procedure rooms, more kennels, new staff facilities and extended vet space, along with a new meeting room.

A central imaging suite will be created, comprising of new state-of-the-art MRI and CT scanners, as part of the major investment.

Mr Emmerson said: “These are very exciting times at NDSR, as work on our extension continues and the plans really begin to take shape with a view to being finished in the summer.

“It’s definitely a powerful illustration of our commitment to offer the very best service possible to all our patients, both in terms of facilities and equipment and in our clinical care.”
