This year’s Closamectin® Kelso Ram Sales saw more rams sold for record prices than ever before, with the best ever averages in some breeds – and a record turnover for the day of almost £3 million.

Ronald Wilson, Secretary of the Border Union Agricultural Society (BUAS), which organises the sales, says the turnout and financial records demonstrate buyers’ confidence in a sheep industry that is currently enjoying a particularly buoyant phase.

“The show proved to be a very satisfactory sale for sellers and buyers. BUAS is delighted to have Norbrook on board as the new sponsor, and we look forward to working together for the next few years holding the Closamectin Kelso Ram Sales.”

This year’s show was the first to be sponsored by British pharmaceutical company Norbrook. As well as its flukicide and wormer Closamectin headlining the sales, Norbrook also staged an exclusive launch for its new product Solantel®. Solantel® is a closantel drench for sheep and lambs which treats liver fluke from 5 weeks immature.

Chris Geddes, Marketing Manager at Norbrook, says the company is pleased to partner with BUAS at the renowned industry event.

“Kelso has been part of sheep farming history for 180 years, and Norbrook is delighted to contribute to this iconic event. Norbrook is committed to supporting the farming community, and we believe that this substantial investment in the Ram Sales will help to advance the event even further.”

In total, 4,285 rams were sold, giving a clearance rate of 83.56% to average £685.48, up £74.80 from the 2015 Sales – and again representing a new record in the show’s history.

Top price of the day was a Bluefaced Leicester shearling from Messrs. Wight, Midlock, which sold for £12,000 to William Keir for his flock at Lancaster.

Norbrook is confirmed as sole event sponsor until 2018, during which time the show will be known as the Closamectin Kelso Ram Sales.
