A Suffolk vet practice has received a glowing endorsement of its top-quality care for cats with a silver award from the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM).

Newmarket’s Lida Vets, which is owned by Linnaeus, has been recognised as a cat-friendly clinic (CFC) by the prestigious ISFM.

Lida’s head veterinary nurse and cat advocate Paige Henderson said the award was a welcome recognition of the practice’s determination to promote wellbeing and the highest possible standards of care for all cats visiting the practice or being hospitalised.

Paige said: “We’re very proud to have achieved silver cat-friendly clinic status. It really has been a big team effort and is a fitting reward for everyone’s hard work and dedication.

“As a team, we made multiple changes for our feline patients. Key changes we have implemented include our cat waiting room, providing cat parking areas which are segregated from dog owners and providing blankets and feliway for all cat owners to use. Finally, all of our feline cages have cat hides which are large enough for all cat breeds.

“We also make sure our ‘no scruff policy’ is recognised throughout the whole team and followed with every feline patient we hold.

“We have been striving towards our accreditation for many years and felt it was important to only go for it when we knew we were providing the best standards for our patients.

“This accreditation is incredibly important and presents a really exciting opportunity for us. We have regular meetings to discuss changes we’ve made and things we can still change, with our next aim of achieving the ultimate CFC gold award.”

The ISFM launched the cat-friendly clinic initiative to encourage veterinary clinics to make changes to improve the welfare of cats in their care.

The programme advises practices on how to make their environment as welcoming as possible for cats, as well as providing support in staff training, handling techniques and cat-specific client care.
