Fings For Fido logoThis month we’ve carefully selected items for our boxes that compliment an outdoor play theme, tugging, retrieving and general fun. This goes nicely with the newsletter ‘Enjoying Your Walks’ written by Nando Brown IMDT, CTDI, CAP2, PPG for In The Dog House. Nando Brown is Head Trainer for In The Doghouse, certified pet dog trainer, clicker trainer, trick dog instructor, security dog handler and assessor for the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers. Nando is also a committee member of the Pet Professional Guild. You can find out more by visiting https://www.facebook.com/ITDHDTC or www.inthedoghousedtc.com Enjoying Your Walks? A dog walk should not only be about exercise but mental stimulation too. Here are some tips to make it more enjoyable for the both of you! Use the right equipment Choke chains and prong collars can injure your dog and cause serious long-term health issues. If your dog doesn’t pull, then using a harness that secures at the back is fine but think what sled pulling dogs wear…….harnesses! Some dogs will feel more comfortable about pulling in a harness. The best things to choose from are a normal flat collar, head collar or a harness that attaches at the front. It’s called a dog walk for a reason This is your dogs chance to get out of the house and socialize so don’t drag him down the street. If your dog is stopping to sniff then let him! This can be used as one of the biggest rewards for good behaviour but you must give him some time to check his pee-mail. Getting attached? The majority of leads that are sold in local pet shops are way too short. If your lead is short it can cause lots of problems. For nervous or aggressive dogs it can act as a trigger, for dogs that are pullers it can reinforce pulling and if you are a tall person with a little dog it can also be very uncomfortable for both of you! Streets ahead Retractable leads are the single most annoying thing to dog trainers (we are a peculiar bunch!). These leads have been responsible for many things including dog fights, lack of manners (dogs, not owners!), burns, amputated fingers and even dead dogs! Learn how to park your dog Dogs need to learn how to relax when you are at the local café or when the humans are talking. A settle down cue is one of the best exercises you can teach. Don’t need to walk your dog? I am often told that the dogs don’t need walks as I have a really big garden. Most dogs that are let out on their own usually sit at the back door waiting to be let back in. They do not set up a circuit training session! Imagine that you were the one being confined to the house on a daily basis and how quickly after less than a week, you too would be bored. If that doesn’t work then the comment made by the late John Fisher works wonders “The size of your prison, doesn’t impress me!” Education is the key! How many times have you heard... "It's down to a lack of education?" Well, the same goes for dog training. I am not a fan of the word ‘training’, it implies the outdated theory that the dog should just do it because we have said so! How long would you last at your job if your boss wanted you to work for no payment? What we should be trying to teach our dogs are manners and skills to help them cope in situations they are unsure about. Educate your dog about the do's and do not's in your house and you'll both be more comfortable. Pack Leader! If you think you need to be a pack leader then you can breathe a sigh of relief and let go of that regimented way of life. The pack leader and dominant dog thing has long since been disproven by science but that doesn't mean you have to let your dog run all over you. You are a team, a partnership and most importantly best friends! Now stop reading this, grab one of the toys from this luxury gift set and get out there with your dog!
