Surfers having a lesson on the beach 48 vets signed up for the second ‘CPD and Surf’ day held by Virbac at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay. ‘Current thinking on companion animal vaccines’ and ‘Awful Atopics’ were covered during the morning session on Friday 26 April with speakers Senior Field Veterinary Advisor Alex Allen BVM&S MRCVS and dermatologist Peri Lau-Gillard DrMedVet CertVD DipECVD MRCVS. In the afternoon, delegates swapped note pads for wet suits and a surfing lesson on Fistral beach. Rebecca Skellern, a Small Animal Assistant at the Coombefield Veterinary Hospital, Axminster, commented: “The day was good value, offering CPD and the opportunity to try surfing - something I probably wouldn't have done otherwise. The Leishmania discussion was particularly helpful and highlighted the importance of the disease for dogs going abroad. Peri-Lau Gillard also gave an engaging talk on atopic dermatitis. Surfers lined up in front of their surfboards Despite never having surfed before and being completely uncoordinated, I managed to stand up on my board – albeit for less than a second. The water wasn’t nearly as cold as I expected!” Della Tomlinson, Territory Manager for Virbac in Cornwall, added: “We were delighted to have so many delegates, some from as far afield as Surrey. Despite the chilly weather, we braved it in the water and had a fantastic time. I’m proud to say that many of the delegates mastered the art of surfing in no time! As this mix of CPD and fun is proving so popular, we’re hoping to organise similar events in future!” Founded by a veterinary surgeon, Virbac is dedicated to supporting the veterinary profession through the development of innovative products and services, which support their businesses and help animals lead longer, healthier lives.
