Surgical Oncologist Joins Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists

Dr Francesco Gemignani BDVM SCMPA MSc Clin Onc, PhD, MRCVS has joined Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists in Alton, Hampshire.  Dr Gemignani, a surgeon with a special interest in oncology, will enhance the hospital’s multi-disciplinary capabilities and will lead its surgery team for patients requiring broad soft tissue surgery, including Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) surgery, minimally invasive laparoscopy and surgical oncology cases. 

Dr Gemignani graduated from the University of Pisa, Italy, and ran a small animal practice in Italy for ten years. He achieved the Italian Diploma in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at University of Milan before undertaking a PhD in Soft Tissue Surgery at the University of Padua in 2013.  As part of this, he undertook an externship at the University of Florida’s Oncology Service and completed a study in feline mammary carcinoma for UC Davis in California. In 2014, he studied for a Masters in Clinical Oncology at the University of Birmingham, presenting a thesis entitled: ‘Systematic Review about Toceranib in Small Animal Cancer.’   Lumbry Park is one of the most advanced, multi-disciplinary specialist veterinary hospitals in the UK and part of CVS’ rapidly growing referral network. 

Commenting on the appointment of Dr Gemignani, Mr Ray Girotti, Hospital Director, said: “Francesco’s experience in upper airway surgery in particular will significantly enhance the surgical service we offer to our patients and his interest in oncology is an important addition to our multi-disciplinary offering.  We are delighted to welcome him.”
