A seriously injured Border Terrier hit by a car has made a miraculous recovery thanks to experts at a Runcorn animal hospital.

The accident left two-year-old Teddy fighting for his life and shaken owner Kate Oakley from Powys knows that if it wasn’t for the skills of the team at Northwest Veterinary Specialists (NWVS) her much-loved dog would probably have died.

Teddy had managed to find a way through a hedge in an enclosed garden when chasing his favourite ball and was hit by a car whose driver had no way of avoiding him.

Following emergency care and a specialist referral from Teddy's local veterinary practice in Four Crosses, Powys, investigations by experts at Linnaeus-owned NWVS found significant trauma to Teddy’s head and shoulder, however, such has been the success of his recovery that Kate says it is hard to believe he has been through anything traumatic.

Kate said: “Teddy is truly part of the family and we cannot imagine our lives without him.

“I was away in Italy when the accident happened and was understandably emotional when I saw an unresponsive and extremely poorly Teddy for the first time.

“He was extremely lucky to survive and my thanks go to the team at Northwest Veterinary Specialists who gave him the best care possible.

“Now he’s playing with his toys, his personality is back and he’s not at all anxious. He even loves the attention he gets with his physiotherapy sessions at the practice.”

Luca Motta, head of neurology at NWVS, said: “Teddy suffered a serious brain injury and it was also thought he had some visual impairment.

“It was a long road to recovery for Teddy. With intensive nursing, he slowly started to respond to treatment, his vision returned, he began to show an interest in food again and took his first few wobbly steps down the corridor.

“His owners came to visit him every day which perked him up and he was discharged to recover at home after staying with us for seven days.

“He’s been back for reassessment and further treatment and the great news is that he has fully recovered from the traumatic brain injury. We are thrilled to see him do so well after such a serious accident.”

Northwest Veterinary Specialists (NWVS) is one of the UK’s leading specialist-led animal hospitals. It offers care in anaesthesia and analgesia, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, physiotherapy, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
