A leading UK small animal hospital has expanded its oncology service to cope with an increasing demand for its expert cancer care.

Linnaeus-owned Wear Referrals in Bradbury, County Durham, has appointed oncology clinician Slavomira Necova to its team.

Slavomira, known as Slavka, will be working alongside renowned RCVS and EBVS European specialist in small animal oncology Aaron Harper and is excited by the prospect of joining the multidisciplinary hospital.

She said: “I came to Wear to help build an amazing oncology team which will provide the best possible care to the patients who are referred to us.

“We provide all aspects of cancer treatment, including surgery and chemotherapy, and offer expertise in managing the complications of cancer and relevant treatments.

“Working in oncology means we often care for patients over the longer term, with pets needing to make frequent visits to the hospital for ongoing treatment.

“A cancer diagnosis is obviously a difficult time for owners and a key role for us is to provide a friendly and supportive environment for them throughout their pet’s treatment.

“I have treated so many different patients, all with varied personalities, and in a way every patient becomes memorable because you spend so much time caring for them.”

Aaron said he was delighted to welcome Slavka to Wear and is looking forward to expanding the hospital’s cancer care for patients across the North East.

He said: “Slavka’s arrival means we can now help even more cancer patients across the region.

“We’re the only specialist-led oncology service in the North East and are backed up by a multi-disciplinary team for all aspects of cancer care and treatment under the same roof.

“We have our own specific chemotherapy suite and can offer advanced imaging with state-of-the-art CT and MRI scanners.

“Wherever possible we also deliver minimally invasive biopsy techniques including video endoscopy and laparoscopy.

“We accept all cases with a diagnosis of cancer in dogs and cats, including conditions such as blood cancers (lymphoma, leukaemia), carcinomas, sarcomas and skin cancers such as mast cell tumours.

“We also offer investigations of suspected cancers such as abdominal masses and enlarged lymph nodes.”

Slavka, who graduated from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Kosice, Slovakia, in 2009, said she had always wanted to care for animals.

She added: “I wanted to be a vet for as long as I can remember. My mum tells me that as a young child I would just run to any dog that was passing by!

“The vision of being able to help animals and make them feel better drew me to this wonderful but challenging job.”

Wear specialises in providing expert multidisciplinary care, including anaesthesia, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, intensive care, internal medicine, neurology, OOH emergency and critical care, oncology, orthopaedics and soft tissue, as well as an in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation service.

The hospital has six consultation rooms, four operating theatres, two dog wards, a cat ward, isolation ward and prep room, plus an intensive care unit (ICU), cardiology suite, imaging suite, MRI scanner, ultrasound, CT, endoscopy, fluoroscopy, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy and hydrotherapy facilities.
