TR BioSurgical Completes Comparative Orthopedic Study In Dogs With Ligament Injuries

Chandler, Ariz. – (October 22nd, 2008)   TR BioSurgical, LLC, announced the completion of a study in dogs undergoing surgery for cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) repair, a market estimated to exceed $1 billion in annual dog owner spending in the United States. The study compared the use of TR Matrix™, an osteopromotive bioscaffold, to autologous cancellous bone graft for osteotomy repair associated with the Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) surgery, a common procedure for cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injury. Results indicate TR Matrix™ is equal or superior to autologous bone grafting in clinical and radiographic scoring and may be a viable alternative to bone grafting procedures. Dr. Jeff Kellerman, VP of R&D, stated, “The ultimate goals of cranial cruciate ligament repair in dogs are rapid recovery time and a return to near normal structure and function. In order for the TPLO and TTA procedures to achieve these goals they require cutting of healthy bone in the patient, referred to as an osteotomy. Application of TR Matrix is a critical step in achieving rapid and unimpaired healing of these osteotomy sites thereby accomplishing key goals in cruciate ligament repair and surgical outcome.” About Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) Injury in Dogs: CCL injury is a prevalent injury in dogs and is similar to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in humans. The injury results in joint instability and often accelerates the process of degenerative joint disease.
