An industry-leading veterinary hospital in the South West has added three more key staff to its talented team of experts.

Eastcott Veterinary Referrals, in Swindon, Wiltshire, which has just launched a £500,000 Emergency and Critical Care service, has recruited specialists Vanessa Woolhead and Andrew Phillips and residency-trained anaesthesiologist Maria Valentina Carrozzo.

Vanessa and Andrew both join from the Royal Veterinary College in London.

Andrew is a European Veterinary Specialist in Small Animal Surgery while Vanessa gained her internal medicine diplomate status from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Maria Valentina has worked in Italy, France, Belgium and Canada.

Eastcott’s clinical director Duncan Barnes said: “We’re delighted to welcome Vanessa, Andrew and Maria Valentina to the team at Eastcott. I have no doubt they will help us to further extend the first-class care we offer to our patients and clients.”

Vanessa, who has a special interest in endocrinology, gastroenterology and immunology, said: “I am very excited to be starting at Eastcott and contributing to making the lives of our patients better.”

Vanessa’s experience includes managing complex medical cases with multiple comorbidities, managing hyperthyroid cats through the use of radioactive iodine therapy and diagnosing and managing challenging endocrinopathies.

She is a proficient endoscopist, including gastrointestinal, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy, cystoscopy and has experience supporting new graduates and specialists-in-training.

Fellow specialist Andrew, whose arrival will expand the depth and breadth of Eastcott’s surgery team, is also keen to make an impact.

He said: “I enjoy all aspects of surgery, particularly emergency surgery, traumatology, oncology and minimally invasive procedures. I’m looking forward to making a real contribution to the continuing delivery of excellent animal care here.”

Maria Valentina graduated with distinction at the University of Perugia in Italy in 2007 and worked in private practices in Italy for five years before gaining valuable experience at the National Veterinary School in Paris, then spending a year at Liege University before becoming an associate professor at the University of Saskatchewan.

She said: “I’m interested in perioperative and chronic pain management, haemodynamic changes and perioperative stabilization, cardiovascular changes during mini-invasive cardiac procedure, geriatric and paediatric anaesthesia, exotics and acupuncture.”
