A leading independent farm veterinary practice working across South West England and South Wales has launched a new staff wellbeing initiative, reinforcing its commitment to supporting people in one of the most demanding areas of the profession.

Tyndale Vets, based near Dursley in Gloucestershire, has introduced a structured wellness programme aimed at supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of its 30-plus team. The practice, which is a member of XLVets - a community of independently owned veterinary practices that share knowledge and best practice - says the initiative reflects both the realities of modern farm veterinary work and its long-standing people-first ethos.

The programme was launched with a dedicated Wellness Week, bringing together practical support, professional wellbeing input and day-to-day interventions designed to make a tangible difference to the team, who can work long hours, often alone, and are frequently on the road.

Director and vet Bryony Kendall, said the idea had been developing for some time and the initiative was led by Jessica James, who is the PR and marketing manager at Tyndale Vets.

Jessica said: “People spend such a large proportion of their lives at work, and it’s important that they feel supported whilst they’re here and helped when facing the challenges that life inevitably throws at you.”

Wellness Week focused on one activity per day. These included on-site sports massage sessions, a Pilates class, and a wellbeing workshop delivered by consultants from Health Shield, a provider Tyndale already works with for health benefits, such as dental and optical cover. The session provided a general overview of wellbeing, with plans to follow up with more targeted sessions later in the year on areas such as sleep, fatigue and resilience.

The practice also introduced daily healthy lunches, hydration stations with flavoured water, healthy snacks and herbal teas, alongside a hot chocolate station. Vets on farm visits are given hot drinks vouchers, as a practical acknowledgement of the time spent travelling between calls.

Bryony said: “Farm veterinary work can be isolating. There’s a lot of time spent driving and working independently, so this is about reinforcing that people are part of a supportive team. Our aim is not to run a one-off event, but to embed wellbeing into all areas of how we operate as a business.”

XLVets has over 70 member practices, all of which share best practice, experience and knowledge. Kerrie Hedley, XLVets' CEO, said: “This is a thoughtful initiative from Tyndale Vets, and reflects the strong focus our community places on supporting happy and healthy teams in practice. A successful team directly translates into the high standard of care and service that clients receive. We are keen to share experiences like this to support and strengthen our community.”

Feedback from the team has been positive, and Tyndale Vets plans to continue developing the programme throughout the year, potentially drawing on shared learning from the XLVets community.
