Emeritus Professor Michael J Day BSc BVMS (Hons) PhD DSc DiplECVP FASM FRCPath FRCVS has been elected to the Executive Board of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA).  During his one-year term of office, which commenced in September 2017, he will be mentored by the WSAVA’s current Honorary Treasurer, Dutch veterinarian Ellen van Nierop, to become a nominee for the position of Honorary Treasurer in 2018.

Michael Day is a Past President of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) and has been involved with the WSAVA since 2003, most recently as Chair of its Vaccination Guidelines Group and One Health Committee.  He is Emeritus Professor of Veterinary Pathology at the University of Bristol and Adjunct Professor of Veterinary Pathology in the School of Veterinary and Life Sciences, Murdoch University, Western Australia.  He is currently Director of Pathology for Asia Veterinary Diagnostics, a diagnostic laboratory based in Hong Kong and Singapore.  Professor Day is also a member of the WSAVA charitable Foundation’s AFSCAN project board and a trustee of the charity Mission Rabies.

The WSAVA represents more than 200,000 veterinarians worldwide through 105 member associations, including BSAVA in the UK. It aims to advance the health and welfare of companion animals worldwide through building an educated, committed and collaborative global community of veterinary peers.  Its core activities include the development of WSAVA Global Guidelines in key areas of veterinary practice; the creation of tools and resources for veterinarians and providing continuing education (CE) in regions where companion animal practice is still developing.

Professor Day commented: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to commit further to the goals and ideals of WSAVA with this new role on the Executive Board.  I have a passion for global veterinary development and have worked actively in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Russia and Latin America over recent years.  We have achieved a great deal but still face many challenges, for which WSAVA is best placed to provide leadership and co-ordination.”

WSAVA President Dr Walt Ingwersen said: “In considering candidates for the WSAVA’s Executive Board, we aim to conserve cultural and historic knowledge of the association while facilitating both the infusion of new ideas and global representation.”

“Michael’s dynamic leadership of our Vaccination Guidelines Group and our One Health Committee has ensured that both are now recognized globally for the significant contribution they are making to driving up global best practice in vaccination and to raising awareness of the importance of companion animals in the One Health movement.

“He has a detailed understanding of the WSAVA, a global network of contacts and a deep commitment to what we are working to achieve for our global veterinary community. His reputation goes before him and we are delighted to welcome him to the WSAVA Executive Board.”
