When Zoetis (formerly Pfizer Animal Health) Vet Support+ undertook the most comprehensive bespoke study of employee engagement ever carried out amongst veterinary practices, it identified the three key drivers to an engaged team: leadership; performance management; and team effectiveness. Now the company is launching three new development programmes for vet practices, which address each of these important areas.
The first of these - the Effective Leadership Programme – has been developed in collaboration with an external company that specialises in this area of training. Designed to be as flexible as possible to suit different practice needs, the leadership programme consists of eight separate modules, each lasting approximately two hours, covering every aspect of the subject. Module one starts by exploring what great leadership is and the related skill sets required; module two examines exemplary leadership models; module three provides insights into different leadership styles versus the supportive needs of the team; module four teaches different leadership strategies for different competency levels; module five examines emotional intelligence; module six focuses on the importance of feedback; module seven is about leading and developing a team culture; while module eight examines the all-important subject of leadership and change.
The modular approach means that the Zoetis business consultants can work with a practice to create a leadership programme that is completely unique and tailored to the practice’s specific needs. Each module is very interactive so, although a typical training session may last two hours, only 5 or 10 minutes of that will be theory while the rest will be spent discussing how that theory relates to leadership in the practice.
Members of SPVS and VPMA were the first to experience the Leadership Programme when Nick Steele, National Consulting Manager at Zoetis, ran a CPD session on the subject. The participants valued the interactive, engaging aspect of the training and gave it the highest evaluation marks the organisers have ever seen.
Nick Steele comments: “Vet Support+’s focus has always been on providing solutions to the business challenges that vet practices face on a day-to-day basis so after the Engagement Survey highlighted the importance of leadership in engaging staff and bonded them to the practice, we set about delivering a leadership training programme to enhance this aspect of practice management.”
