Vets And VNs Urged To Take Blood Pressure In Cats
Ceva Animal Health, manufacturer of Amodip, is encouraging vets and veterinary nurses to raise awareness among pet owners about high blood pressure in cats during Feline Hypertension Awareness Months in May and June.
The aim is to support increased screening throughout the year and help identify cats that are living with untreated hypertension.
Ceva has launched a NEW Challenge 20 initiative as part of its ongoing Feline Hypertension Partnership Programme which focuses on building confidence across vet teams and supporting practices to enhance their protocols around feline care. Hypertension is most commonly seen in senior cats, with 40% of cats aged seven and over being identified as hypertensive1. The frequency of the disease increases with age and cats are more likely to be hypertensive if suffering from concurrent conditions1.
Challenge 20 encourages vet professionals to screen and record over 20 new feline blood pressure measurements per practice in cats at increased risk. These include all cats with concurrent diseases such as chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hyperthyroidism, those with signs of target organ damage and all cats over seven years of age. Vets and vet nurses who log 20 new blood pressure measurements will receive a £20 voucher (for every 20 cats measured) and a clinical feedback session with a Ceva technical vet. The Ceva vet will then work with the practice to identify any training requirements and create a tailored plan, before repeating the challenge to track progress and fine-tune the approach.
Ceva is backing the campaign with a range of materials which focus on hidden hypertension and concurrent disease. They include a new vet support pack featuring a cat owner poster, leaflet, owner email content and social media toolkit, plus dedicated time and guidance from Ceva territory managers to help implement better screening protocols. A new feline hypertension bitesize video CPD series is also available to view on Ceva Academy by clicking here.
“Over 1,200 cats were screened during Ceva’s 2025 feline hypertension campaign and a third of them were identified as hypertensive2,” comments Andrew Fullerton BVSc (Hons) MRCVS, senior product manager at Ceva. “We continue to encourage vet professionals to test for feline hypertension in all cats over seven years of age, with a particular focus on those more susceptible to high blood pressure, such as those with concurrent diseases and those with signs of target organ damage through our Challenge 20 initiative. The blood pressure checks will not only enable vets and vet nurses to ‘test, detect and treat’ cats at risk, but it will also allow them to access unique tailored support from Ceva to track progress and fine-tune their approach to monitoring and treating cats with feline hypertension.”
