A leading Scottish veterinary referral centre has appointed a top clinician to further bolster its impressive internal medicine team.

Veterinary Specialists Scotland (VSS), in Livingston, West Lothian, has welcomed the experienced Fiona Whitworth as a clinical fellow in internal medicine.

Fiona has recently moved from Langford Vets at the University of Bristol and joins the hospital’s specialist-led internal medicine team from her most recent role as a clinician in acute medicine.

Greg Barbour, hospital director at Linnaeus-owned VSS, said the appointment of Fiona signalled another significant step forward for the ambitious practice, which opened its doors in October 2020.

He said: “We’re delighted to see Fiona join us here at VSS and we are all extremely excited about her arrival.

“Fiona is an experienced internal medicine clinician who brings with her a wealth of experience to further boost our service.”

Sam Woods, specialist in small animal surgery and clinical director at VSS, added: “We have invested a lot in both our people and our facilities, and Fiona’s appointment is another step forward as we aim to continue providing the highest possible level of care and service to our patients, clients and referring vets.”

Fiona is relishing her move north of the border and a return to central Scotland, where she studied.

She said: “I’m really excited to join such a new hospital which has fantastic facilities and an expanding team. I’m looking forward to contributing to the growth and development of VSS.”

Fiona studied at The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 2011.

She then worked in private practice as an assistant veterinary surgeon in Birmingham, before moving to the University of Bristol, where she completed her internship and residency.

Fiona’s special area of interest is immune mediated disease. Alongside her own published research into immune mediated polyarthritis, she has also been involved in other studies in this field.

VSS is a specialist-led multidisciplinary referral centre offering industry-leading services in internal medicine (feline and canine), neurology, orthopaedics, and soft tissue surgery, supported by specialists in diagnostic imaging and anaesthesia and analgesia.
