Wear Referrals, one of the North East’s leading small animal hospitals, now boasts three neurology specialists at its state-of-the-art referral centre in County Durham.

Alessia Colverde, who joined the Linnaeus-owned hospital as a clinician in 2021, is celebrating after passing exams to become a European Specialist in veterinary neurology.

Her success will see her continue to work on some of the most serious brain and spinal cases at the hospital as part of the expert team led by senior neurologist Professor Clare Rusbridge, a European and RCVS specialist, and fellow European specialist Ana Maria Coelho.

A delighted Alessia said: “It is very rewarding to have achieved specialist status.

“I love neurosurgery and brain surgery and can still vividly remember the first brain tumour I removed as primary surgeon, it was such a memorable moment in my career.

“Everything went well but I was very excited and very nervous all at the same time.”

Alessia’s long-term ambition is to help encourage more young people and students into the veterinary profession.

Alessia, who graduated from the University of Messina, Italy, in 2013 explained: “Firstly, I’m going to celebrate by going to Costa Rica for a two-week holiday and, now that I don’t have to study anymore, I am planning to visit at least one new country every year.

“Long term, I would like to one day open a residency so I can give the same opportunity that was given to me, to other people who deserve it.”

After graduation, Alessia worked in primary care practice for three years before beginning a two-year internship in small animal neurology and neurosurgery at Diagnostica Piccoli Animali, Zugliano (Italy).

She went on to complete a three-year neurology and neurosurgery residency programme under the supervision of Cristian Falzone, a prominent European specialist in veterinary neurology.

When not working, or travelling, Alessia can be found working out in in the gym.

She added: “I am a keen gym person. I train every day and since I started working out my life has changed and improved. I am stronger and it helps me better manage the stress that comes with our job.”
