The world’s largest pet adoption drive – Iams Home 4 the Holidays (IH4TH) – kicked off today and has set a goal to help find loving homes for more than 400,000 pets this holiday season. The campaign, which runs through Jan. 3, 2008, has the power of more than 2,600 animal shelters from around the world that have joined forces in an effort to spread the word about the millions of orphaned pets. “Pet adoption brings the Iams mission of pet well-being to life,” said Kris Parlett, Iams spokesman. “There are as many as 5 million dogs and cats euthanized every year in the U.S., and that number is just too high. It’s our mission to work hard to make an impact, and help reduce that number drastically, and through a program like Iams Home 4 the Holidays that’s possible.” The adoption drive began in 1999 when Helen Woodward Animal Center (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and Iams partnered together to shine a spotlight on the number of animals in shelters and educate the public about the goals established to help save their lives. “The holiday season is a time for families and sharing, so what greater gift is there than to save the life of a pet and give her a safe and happy home,” said Mike Arms, president and executive director of Helen Woodward Animal Center and founder of Home 4 the Holidays. “Every year, more animal shelters join our cause, which is exciting to see, because that makes our collective voice about the importance of pet adoption even stronger. Together we can save hundreds of thousands of pets.” Well known pet lovers, Diane Keaton and Kristen Bell, will continue their support of the adoption drive, and help encourage potential pet parents to consider adopting an animal from a shelter this holiday season. Both actresses are extremely passionate about pet adoption and have adopted pets themselves. Every person or household who adopts a pet through the program will receive an Iams adoption kit filled with helpful information about pet health and nutrition, tips to ensure a successful adoption and ways to help make a new dog or cat’s first few days in their new home even better. About Iams Home 4 the Holidays Iams Home 4 the Holidays began in 1999 when Helen Woodward Animal Center organized 14 shelters in San Diego County, Calif. during the holiday season to find homes for orphaned pets and to take business from the puppy mill industry. These shelters placed 2,563 dogs and cats in their new homes. In 2000, the program expanded to 130 shelters in five states and completed more than 20,000 adoptions. In 2001, Iams Home 4 the Holidays became the largest pet adoption drive in history when 450 participating groups in four countries completed more than 100,000 adoptions. To date, the annual campaign has helped place more than 1.5 million orphaned pets in loving, lifelong homes worldwide. About Helen Woodward Animal Center Helen Woodward Animal Center is a private, non-profit organization where “people help animals and animals help people.” Founded in 1972 in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., the Center provides services for more than 57,000 people and thousands of animals annually. Helen Woodward Animal Center is also the creator of the international Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive and the Animal Center Education Services program, teaching the business of saving lives to animal welfare leaders from around the world.
