Since the devastating earthquake hit Haiti, WSPA’s Disaster Team has been working hard to monitor the situation and assess what WSPA can do for the animals. The toll that this earthquake will take on the people of Haiti is enormous, and WSPA is poised to work alongside the humanitarian aid groups to help the animals that people so desperately rely on in this impoverished country. WSPA’s Disaster Liason Officer from Panama, Jorge Alcidez Gonzalez, is on his way to Haiti with a team of veterinary staff. The team will be carrying veterinary supplies to treat animals that they find, but the main objective in this early stage is to assess the situation and make recommendations on how WSPA should respond. The conditions in Haiti are difficult, it will be extremely dangerous for our team and communications are expected to be difficult. Given the complete collapse of infrastructure and the severance of transport links into Port-au-Prince, any relief operation will be fraught with difficulties, but WSPA remains committed to helping animals affected by the disaster. WSPA will continue to provide up-to-the minute updates as we get information from our team in the field.
