XLVets Small Animal Launches Dental Initiative
A campaign to help raise awareness of dental care for pets has been launched by XLVets small animal group. The campaign, Healthy Smiles Happy Pets, is the result of a collaborative initiative by member practices, says XLVets Small Animal brand manager, Ann Mottram.
“The aim is to help pet owners recognise the signs of gum disease and other common dental problems and to talk to their vet about preventive measures that they can carry out at home,” says Ann. “To encourage pet owners to talk to their vet and request an examination, member practices will be offering dental checks during routine consults,” she adds.
Speaking at the launch, independent consultant John Robinson of Dentist to the Veterinary Profession, welcomed the initiative. “Across the board more needs to be done to ensure that pets have pain and infection free mouths,” explained Mr Robinson.
“It’s great to support a campaign that is designed to focus on dental health and raise awareness among pet owners of dental issues. Hopefully it will lead to some change and action among pet owners,” he added.
The campaign also comprises a wealth of material produced for practices to engage with pet owners, says Ann. “The range includes a dental scorecard which practices can use to encourage owners to check the images against their pet’s teeth and assess whether they are healthy or in need of veterinary attention,” she concludes.
