Zoetis Adds Equine Hematology Capabilities To Vetscan OptiCell™ And Vetscan Imagyst®
Zoetis Inc., the world’s leading animal health company, is expanding its point-of-care diagnostics offering for equine veterinarians with new hematology capabilities across Vetscan OptiCell™ and Vetscan Imagyst®. Together, the updates support a streamlined hematology workflow, helping equine veterinarians access timely, reliable insights and make informed decisions across a range of care settings.
Equine species-specific complete blood count (CBC) profile will be available on Vetscan OptiCell, Zoetis’ award-winning* hematology analyzer, while Vetscan Imagyst, the world’s most capable veterinary AI analyzer†, will offer AI Blood Smear analysis for equine samples. Both updates will be available to customers globally from October 2026.
Dr. Michelle Larsen, Head of Medical Platforms, Clinical Studies, and Medical Education, Global Diagnostics at Zoetis, said: “At Zoetis, our commitment to continuous innovation means constantly expanding what's possible at the point of care, and validating Vetscan OptiCell and Vetscan Imagyst for equine hematology is the next step in that promise. When time matters most, equine veterinarians need diagnostics that keep pace. With an easy-to-use, cartridge-based system, minimal staff hands-on time, and CBC results you can count on in minutes, Vetscan OptiCell – paired with Vetscan Imagyst – helps equine veterinarians make confident, timely clinical decisions right where their patients need them most.”
Bringing CBC testing closer to the equine patient
Vetscan OptiCell, an automated CBC hematology analyzer, delivers results you can count on at the point of care, in as little as six minutes. For equine veterinarians, the newly-validated 22-parameter CBC results of Vetscan Opticell help to provide answers right in the clinic, removing waiting time associated when sending samples to reference laboratories.
Using viscoelastic focusing (VEF) technology and artificial intelligence (AI) powered cell classification, the Vetscan OptiCell is an easy-to-use, lower maintenance CBC analyzer. The single-use cartridge eliminates the need for daily cleaning, controls, or calibration. It also requires no reagent packs or waste containers, and cartridges can be stored at room temperature, saving storage space and time.
Adding AI-powered equine blood smear insight
Vetscan Imagyst, Zoetis’s seven-in-one analyzer, will see the addition of another AI-assisted capability for equine patients, AI Blood Smear. The indication is able to read blood smears in minutes, delivering critical qualitative data to supplement automated CBC counts, helping to provide a complete hematology picture for equine patients.
The platform already includes equine-relevant capabilities such as AI Equine Fecal Egg Count and Digital Cytology, which also supports equine sample analysis via digital clinical pathology slide review.
Elevating the standard of equine care
Together, Vetscan OptiCell and Vetscan Imagyst AI Equine Blood Smear offer comprehensive hematology insights in minutes, streamlining workflows and reducing diagnostic guesswork, all with minimal maintenance.
Alongside Vetscan VS2®, Stablelab® and i-Stat Alinity v®, Zoetis’ equine diagnostics portfolio supports timely, informed decision-making across a range of clinical needs, helping veterinarians deliver a high standard of care for every equine patient.
