The cold weather of the upcoming winter months can be as brutal for our dogs as it is on us. While your pet may be raring to go and play in the snow, the British Veterinary Association recommends that pet owners should take active measures to ensure that their dogs and cats are kept away from potentially fatal hazards this winter. Making sure that your pet stays warm and safe in the cold months can mean the difference between life and death, so follow these tips to keep your dog healthy this winter.

Protect your dog’s paws

Your dog’s paws need ample protection from the frozen ground, so if you’re planning to take your dog out in the snow, see to it that your pet wears socks and shoes or dog booties before heading outdoors. Carry a few spare booties that your dog can change into just in case he steps on a wet patch. After your walk, carefully wipe down your pet’s legs and paws with a wet rag to get rid of any ice crystals or chemicals which can take a toll on your dog’s paws.

Groom your dog regularly

As the weather gets colder, your dog will shed his lighter coat and grow a thicker and heavier coat to protect him from the chilly air. While it can certainly help to keep your pet warm, this thicker coat is more likely to get matted or knotted, so regular grooming is a must during the winter months. It’s a good idea to comb and brush your dog’s coat regularly to get rid of knots and snarls.

Keep your dog away from antifreeze

Antifreeze is a highly toxic substance that can pose a serious threat to your dog’s health. This liquid has a sweet scent, which can be very appealing to dogs. Keep antifreeze bottles tightly covered and out of reach of dogs and children. Wipe down any spilled antifreeze and make sure that your dog doesn’t lap up any of it while you’re cleaning up.

Let your dog wear a coat

You wouldn’t head out into the snow without wearing protective clothing, so it’s only right that your dog should have his very own winter gear too. Let your pet wear a sweater or a winter coat if you’re heading outside. Consider having several on hand in various thicknesses so your dog can feel warm and comfortable indoors or outdoors.

Feed your dog

If your dog is active, you may want to feed your pet more frequently during the winter months. Dogs need to burn calories to stay warm, and letting your dog consume warming stews can help to keep him healthy this winter.

As you prepare for the winter months, it’s important not to forget your furry friend by making sure that your dog has everything he needs to stay warm and comfortable. Follow these tips to keep your dog healthy and happy this winter.
