Vision Matters – A Focus on Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca

Newbury, February - 2016 – Ocular conditions account for around one in ten canine consultations in first opinion practice.1 One of the more common ocular conditions of dogs is keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), or dry eye, which affects around five percent of all dogs2, and up to 20 percent of predisposed breeds.3   Early diagnosis and treatment can have a significant impact on prognosis, so to assist with this, Bayer Animal Health has produced a new educational resource now available on the Bayer Vet Centre.

The guide provides a concise overview of the condition, including aetiology, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management.  It also covers some commonly asked questions such as how to manage refractory cases and when to refer.  The guide has been produced with input from ophthalmologist Chris Dixon BVSc CertVOphthal MRCVS, who offers further guidance throughout the report.

Hannah Watts, Group Product Manager at Bayer said: “The guide follows the success of last year’s owner education campaign, where we reached nearly 40,000 dog owners with a series of educational eye health videos that prompted owners to seek advice from their vet. Our focus in 2016 will be to support vets further with a range of educational materials, the KCS guide being the first of these. We hope the guide will be a useful resource for vets in practice, providing them with a quick reference point for all KCS cases.’’

‘Vision Matters – A Focus on Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca’ has been launched as part of the RemendTM Vision Matters campaign and is available for download at https://vetcentre.bayer.co.uk or http://goo.gl/HOM1Y4 Alternatively please contact your local Bayer Territory Manager or call 01635 563000.
