A chance transatlantic chat has resulted in good news for one of the UK’s leading animal hospitals.
The out-of-the-blue call has led to the appointment of American veterinary specialist Dr Jennie Good to the critical care team at Linnaeus-owned Paragon Veterinary Referrals in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
Dr Good was assistant professor in small animal emergency and critical care and small animal medicine and surgery for the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine, but has now jetted to England to take up a new challenge.
She said: “I did not expect this opportunity to come about and that’s why I am so pleased to be joining the Paragon team.
“I began thinking about the possibility of moving and working abroad in 2021 and reached out to colleagues who had made such a move.
“I had some colleagues in common with Sophie Adamantos, clinical director at Paragon, so we began speaking. We got on very well and quickly discovered we have a very similar approach to critical care.
“The more we spoke, the more we realised that I could be a good addition to the team and help develop and advance critical care at the hospital. The pieces fell into place and here we are!
“My aim now is to see how I can best support the other services at Paragon, as well as continuing to grow and develop the ICU as a crucial part of the hospital.
“I’m looking forward to meeting and working with colleagues in all specialities and taking a multi- modal approach to patient care.”
Sophie said she was delighted something totally unplanned has created such good fortune for the hospital.
She said: “Jennie serendipitously contacted me about roles within Linnaeus at a time when we were just beginning to explore how we could better support our growing ICU patient group and our clinicians with their more critically ill cases.
“It was clear we had a very similar philosophy. Dr Good has an extensive background working in a variety of situations which will allow us to ensure we can deliver the outstanding levels of care we want to within our hospital.”
Speaking about her experiences to date, Dr Good said: “Some of my favourite cases have been injured or orphaned wildlife. I especially remember an owl with head trauma, an orphaned opossum, taking radiographs of a red-tailed hawk and caring for an orphaned song bird.
“With critical illness comes very intense discussions and relationships and the cases that stick with me the most involve not just the pet but their family as well.
“It is amazing the stories and memories that people share when their pet is in the hospital and I am always grateful that families are willing to be so open and honest.”
Paragon’s multi-disciplinary care includes anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, emergency and critical care and soft tissue surgery.
