An award-winning vet at one of the UK’s leading referral centres is celebrating again after becoming a European Specialist in small animal surgery.

Success is certainly no stranger to Emma Hall, who’s a key member of the talented team at the renowned North Downs Specialist Referrals in Bletchlingley, Surrey, which is part of Linnaeus.

She’s won two awards in the past two years as well as studying for her BSAVA post-graduate certificate in surgery and her ECVS Diploma.

NDSR hospital director Terry Emmerson said: “Emma is extremely dedicated and focused and it’s no surprise she has achieved specialist status.

“We are delighted for her and very pleased to be adding yet another specialist to our widely-experienced and highly-trained staff.”

Emma, who graduated from the University of Bristol in 2011, added: “The biggest thrill about becoming a specialist is that I can now use my skills to even greater effect here at NDSR.

“I’m interested in all aspects of surgery and particularly enjoy thoracic surgery, oncological surgery and fracture management.

“I can’t wait to make an even greater contribution to the care and treatment of our patients, it’s what we pride ourselves on at North Downs.”

Emma spent the first three years of her career working in a number of small animal hospitals in West Sussex and Oxfordshire.

She undertook a rotating internship at the University of Glasgow in 2014 and a surgical internship at Fitzpatrick Referral Centre in 2015, before completing her three-year residency at Willows Veterinary Centre and Referral Service, in Solihull, which is also part of Linnaeus.

During her residency, Emma published a paper on the accuracy of patient-specific 3D-printed ostectomy and reduction guides for distal femoral osteotomy for medial patella luxation in dogs.

This was presented as an abstract at ECVS in Athens in 2018 and Emma was awarded the Best Orthopaedic Presentation Resident Award.

She was also awarded the Leslie Vaughan Prize in 2019 for a presentation on the use of dynamic external skeletal fixators for the management of mandibular drift in cats.

North Downs specialises in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dentistry, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery and spinal surgery.
