Paragon Veterinary Referrals has held its first Yorkshire Day to mark the county’s special date and has topped proceedings with an eagerly contested Yorkshire Pudding eating competition.

Lead veterinary nurse and proud Yorkshire lass Helen Garbett spearheaded the fun day of activities at the Wakefield animal hospital, which paid homage to what makes the white rose county great.

The fun-filled day was packed with Yorkshire reminders including colleagues wearing flat caps, a Yorkshire quiz to test people’s knowledge of the region, plus a Yorkshire dialect hunt which saw 10 phrases being placed around Linnaeus-owned Paragon, which team members had to find and translate.

There was also a ‘stick the flat cap on the whippet’ game starring one of the nurses’ whippets, who was the perfect photography model, and for those who were thirsty, a competition to guess how many Yorkshire Tea bags were in the jar.

However, the undoubted highlight was the Yorkshire Pudding eating competition which ended as a tie with two contestants eating an impressive 13 puddings in three minutes, meaning a tense tie-break was called for which was won by James Rushton, a specialist in veterinary ophthalmology.

Helen said: “I organised the event because I am very proud of Yorkshire, it has a rich history throughout the ages and is a beautiful and diverse place.

“Furthermore, I wanted to bring some light-hearted fun to the workplace. Not all colleagues are from Yorkshire but we do all work here.

“I was really impressed how the team got behind the events. When it came to the Yorkshire Pudding eating competition, everyone who was free came out to cheer the competitors on!”

Paragon provides expert care in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, critical care, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
