Newbury, March, 2016 - Subsequent to a recent survey commissioned by Bayer Animal Health amongst dog owners and veterinary professionals on the topic of canine ocular health, Bayer has produced a series of educational videos as part of its Vision Matters campaign, with a particular focus on the common canine condition: Dry Eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca, KCS).

The research amongst 1,700 dog owners highlights the challenges vets face when it comes to client awareness of ocular health.  Nearly half (46%) of owners were not aware that their pet could suffer from dry eye1, a condition that affects around 1 in 22 dogs.2  The survey also reveals that 26% of owners never check their dog’s eyes for signs of infection or damage1.

165 vets were also surveyed as part of the research. Results show that almost all vets who have treated cases of KCS believe that the majority of patients would have benefited from being seen earlier.3 70% of vets surveyed felt that owners not understanding the lifelong nature of the condition is one of the main barriers to compliance.3

Hosted by TV veterinary surgeon Paul Manktelow, the video series entitled ‘The World Through Their Eyes‘ offers advice to dog owners on how to care for their dog’s eyesight, with the key message throughout encouraging owners to contact their vet with any concerns.  Available with subtitles, the videos can be played within practice waiting rooms, helping veterinary practices to communicate the importance of ocular health to their clients.   An infographic that features vital statistics and information on canine ocular health is also available, and accompanies the video series to further aid in education of dog owners on the importance of caring for their dog’s eyes.

Hannah Watts, Group Product Manager at Bayer says “The research highlights that there is a real need for education on the topic of canine ocular health, aimed at pet owners. The video series addresses this need, and in particular helps owners to identify possible signs of KCS, encouraging them to speak to their vet if they feel their dog may be at risk.  The videos aim to increase awareness of the disease amongst dog owners in order to assist with early diagnosis, help improve treatment outcomes and aid compliance.”

The videos and infographic have been launched as part of the RemendTM Vision Matters campaign and are available to vets via the Bayer Vet Centre.
