BSAVA Congress Introduces Lunchtime Lectures

New to the BSAVA Stand at Congress this year is a series of free pop up lunchtime lectures. They are free to all attendees but places are limited so delegates are encouraged to arrive early to secure their spot.

The new lectures were born out of the success of last year’s pop up sessions at the BSAVA Stand. They will be running at 1.15pm Thursday to Saturday inclusive and will cover the important practicalities of antimicrobial resistance and BSAVA’s PROTECT ME resources, developments in pain management and managing biosecurity in a cat shelter environment.

Antimicrobial resistance represents a growing threat to animal and human health. Antibiotic stewardship initiatives encourage the responsible use of these medications to safeguard their efficacy for future generations. On Thursday Fergus Allerton BSc BVSc CertSAM DipECVIM-CA MRCVS will be ‘Encouraging a rational approach to the use of antibiotics in small animal practice’. He will highlight ways to reduce and optimise the use of antibiotics through resources such as the PROTECT ME poster and the non-prescription pad.

Pain recognition, assessment and treatment is a rapidly expanding area of interest in companion animal medicine, helped by knowledge about the detrimental effects of pain, increased numbers of licensed analgesic drugs and the introduction of validated pain scales. This talk will look at the evolution of veterinary pain medicine, as well as explore newer developments in the area. On Friday Ian Self BSc BVSc PGCert Ved Ed FHEA CertVA DipECVAA MRCVS will discuss ‘Pain in companion animals – where have we come from and what is the future of pain treatment?’

The nature of the cat shelter environment means that both infectious disease and stress are common in cats, and it can be difficult to manage both of these successfully and fulfil all the cats’ welfare needs. A fundamental understanding of cat behaviour and how the domestic cat has evolved is crucial, and this needs to be applied to all aspects of their care, including pen design, environmental enrichment, scent continuity, handling and socialisation. On the Saturday Maggie Roberts BVM&S MRCVS will look at ‘Getting the balance right – biosecurity versus cats’ welfare needs in shelters’.

This is the second year that the double decker BSAVA Stand has taken centre stage on the Arena floor. The lower deck floor will be devoted to BSAVA’s vast collection of publications, including seven new titles. It will also be showcasing BSAVA’s online library. The upper deck is all about member resources and education. As well as enjoying the new lunchtime lectures delegates will be able to find out more about BSAVA’s expanding national and regional CPD programmes.
