Stray dogs in the Caribbean
The BVS are very proud to be helping the Caribbean Spay Neuter appeal raise awareness in the UK of the problems caused by overpopulation of stray animals in the Caribbean. If everybody could take a moment to read and understand their cause then maybe together we can ease the suffering slightly.
The campaign is focused on raising sufficient funds to cover all of the expenses for a medium scale spay/neuter project and daily spays/neuters for low income families. We are aiming to complete around 400 surgeries in 3–4 days.
Karin Wanner
Karin Wanner is the head of the Caribbean Spay Neuter and she is making a heartfelt appeal for help and support to tackle the problem of overpopulation on the Caribbean islands and some of the shocking conditions and treatment these animals endure on a daily basis.
She said “After years of volunteering in animal shelters and fostering dogs we came to the realisation that the problem must be addressed at it root cause and the best and most effective way to combat over population is by spaying and neutering.”
“It is not uncommon in the Caribbean for unwanted cat and dog litters to be drowned in buckets by their owners or thrown in to the rivers or on-coming traffic. There is very little food or water available so the conditions and diseases are awful.”
The Caribbean Spay Neuter Appeal is hoping to raise around $30,000 to cover the expenses for medical supplies, shipping, veterinary teams, accommodation, food and facilities where this project can take place.
They were recently involved with 2 very successful spay and neuter projects with 4 international organisations where more than 700 dogs and cats have been spayed and neutered.
Stuart Lithgow, Director of the BVS says “When we were made aware of this appeal we were very happy to help raise awareness in the UK and even if we only make a small difference then it has been worthwhile. We are continually trying to make a difference and we will always support non-profit and charity organisations with their efforts for the welfare of animals.”
