Two clinicians at a Cheshire animal hospital are celebrating passing their exams and achieving European diplomate status.
Oscar Bautista Diaz-Delgado and Matthew Smith, from Linnaeus-owned Northwest Veterinary Specialists (NWVS), in Runcorn, are now EBVS European specialists in anaesthesia and small animal surgery respectively.
Oscar graduated from the University of Extremadura, Spain, in 2013, where he also completed an internship before a two-and-a-half-year spell at the University Alfonso X El Sabio (Madrid).
After moving to England, Oscar joined the Small Animal Teaching Hospital at the University of Liverpool as an intern, before completing a residency at the same institution.
He joined NWVS last year and is immediately using his new qualification to support head of anaesthesia, Perrine Benmansour, with the expansion of the practice’s pain clinic. Oscar is also working one day a week at fellow Linnaeus practice Eye Vet, in Sutton Weaver.
Oscar´s main interests include anaesthesia in the critical patient, loco-regional anaesthesia and pain management.
He said: “It is such a relief, I couldn't believe it when I got the results. This is something I have been trying to achieve since I was in the third year of my career.
“Working at NWVS has been great and I couldn’t be more thankful, as everyone has supported me from the first minute.
“I’m particularly interested in using my qualification to improve the workflow of cases and help with the training of nurses and interns, to pass on what I have learned.”
Matt graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2005, before spending six years in small and mixed practice. He switched focus to small animal surgery in 2011, achieving the ESVPS Certificate in Small Animal Surgery in 2012 and the RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice in 2015.
Matt became an RCVS-recognised advanced practitioner in 2016 and moved to NWVS in 2018 for his residency.
Matt said: “I am over the moon to have passed my specialist exams and I’m very grateful to my colleagues at NWVS who have been supporting me throughout.
“I enjoy all aspects of small animal surgery, in particular fracture management, treatment of cranial cruciate ligament disease, arthroscopy, thoracic and abdominal surgery, so I am looking forward to putting my qualifications to good use in these areas.”
