IMPROVING vets’ and practice staff’s communication skills in euthanasia consults is the focus of a one-day SPVS-led workshop on pet bereavement taking place on January 15.
The event is suitable for anyone in contact with pet-bereaved clients including vets, VNs and receptionists. It is designed and delivered by Dr Sue Dawson, training manager with the Blue Cross/SCAS Pet Bereavement Support Service (PBSS).
Dealing with owners’ distress at first being told that a beloved pet has to be put to sleep to helping with saying goodbye are situations that can be extremely difficult to handle and are areas which the workshop will address. Being sympathetic to the owner’s feelings of loss and despair, and communicating that euthanasia is an acceptable option and when all other solutions have been explored is crucial.
As course presenter Dr Dawson explained: “This course will provide insight into clients’ needs at this very difficult time, and practical guidelines on how veterinary staff can effectively communicate their understanding and support. Clients really appreciate this and it also helps staff to approach the situation with confidence.”
SPVS Pet Bereavement Day will take place on 15 January, 2009 at the Worsely Park Marriot Hotel in Manchester. The cost of the seminar is £150 plus VAT for the first delegate and £130 + VAT for further delegates from the same practice.
