Dechra has launched an informative new Dechra Academy strangles vaccination webinar series to update vets on the disease and the strangles vaccines available.

The three-part webinar series features content from the International Equine Infectious Diseases Conference (EIDC) and includes three 10-to-15-minute presentations from leading strangles experts.

The first session by Andrew Waller, chief scientific officer at Intervacc AB in Stockholm, covers ‘Strangles diagnosis, control and vaccination’.  It features information on how the movement of horses continues to facilitate Streptococcus equi’s ‘globetrotting’ lifestyle and the spread of different strains across the world.  It also includes details on the three types of vaccines against strangles available worldwide: live attenuated, cell extract and recombinant fusion protein and their application alongside biosecurity and diagnostic procedures to help eradicate strangles from horse populations at a local level.

‘Functional activities of antibody responses following vaccination of ponies with a multicomponent subunit vaccine against strangles’ is the title of the second webinar which is presented by Francesco Righetti, postdoctoral researcher at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm.  Her session features a comprehensive overview of the genomic sequences of the eight antigens that make up the recombinant fusion protein vaccine Strangvac.  Genomic sequences from 1026 isolates of S. equi from 19 different countries were analysed and 1579 of the 1580 amino acids in Strangvac were identical in 98.3% of genomes.

The final webinar is presented by Sarah Frosth, doctor of philosophy at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences SLU – Department of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health and is entitled ‘Conservation of antigen sequences across a global population of S. equi.  The session focuses on research into the antibody response to Strangvac and the ideE-neutralising response that was maintained up to six months post second vaccination and increased following a third vaccination at three, six- or 12-months post second vaccination.

Sara Barker BVSc CertAVP(EM) MRCVS, equine field support manager at Dechra, comments: “The Dechra Academy strangles vaccination webinar series provides vets with the latest, up-to-date information on strangles vaccines in an easy-to-watch format that can be viewed at their convenience.  There is now over seven hours of equine content on the platform ensuring that vets can upskill on a range of topics including ‘Equine pain, recognition and management’ and ‘How to perform intra-articular (joint) injections in the equine limb’.
