A British vet who volunteered with an animal rescue charity in the Caribbean has thanked Dechra Veterinary Products for supporting her trip with a range of donated products. Emma Robinson BVM&S MRCVS was a volunteer vet at the Grenada SPCA animal shelter, which offers low cost and free treatment for animals on the island. Working mainly with cats and dogs, the shelter's programmes include spay/neuter clinics, educational activities, vaccination clinics, volunteer vet schemes and community outreach programmes for unwanted, abused, neglected or stray animals. Dechra Veterinary Products provided Emma, currently working as a locum vet in north-east Scotland, with Fiprodog® flea spot-on treatments and Clavudale® for the treatment of bacterial infections. Emma said: “I volunteered for four weeks, mainly working at the charity's small animal clinic. We held a vaccine session where local people were encouraged to bring their dogs along to be vaccinated against Distemper hepatitis Parvovirus and Rabies for just $10 ECD, equivalent to £2.50. “Thanks to the generosity of Dechra, each of the 50 dogs we vaccinated that day were also given a spot on of Fiprodog. These are much loved pets but people just don’t have the money to be able to afford what we consider routine essential prophylatic vaccinations and parasticides. Products are also very hard to get hold of resulting in owners using engine oil to treat ticks and mange often proving fatal. “The work of the Grenada SPCA is essential to the local community. There is a full time vet and vet nurse sponsored by St Georges University Grenada, but help and support from volunteer vets like myself and pharmaceutical companies like Dechra enable the work to continue.” Dechra Veterinary Products' UK and Ireland Country Manager Bob Parmenter said: “We were delighted to be able to help when Emma approached us for support for her volunteering trip. We were pleased to be able to supply her with two products from Dechra's Veterinary Essentials range - including Fiprodog and Clavudale.” Emma is urging other vets to consider spending time with the organisation, which works closely with the government to assist with the Animal Control Act and the Rabies Vaccination and Dog Registration program. Any veterinary professional interested in volunteering should visit www.facebook.com/grenadaSPCA and send a message for the attention of Sharon Sage.
