Dechra Veterinary Products will host two free webinars to provide support and advice on common ailments of small exotic mammals in November and December.

The sessions, that can be watched online from anywhere in the world, will provide valuable advice and solutions together with practical case studies and are designed to help veterinary professionals recognise key symptoms and aid early diagnosis.

Exotics expert Joanna Hedley BVM&S DZooMed (Reptilian) DipECZM (Herpetology) MRCVS will host the webinars on November 25 and December 2. Both will begin at 7pm.

Joanna qualified from Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in 2003 and spent time in mixed, small animal, exotic and wildlife practice before undertaking a residency in Exotic Animal and Wildlife medicine back at R(D)SVS where she obtained her RCVS Diploma in Zoological Medicine.

She is currently working as a Lecturer in Exotic Species and Small Mammal Medicine and Surgery at the Royal Veterinary College in Camden, where she is developing the exotics clinical service and student teaching. In her spare time, she continues to volunteer at a local wildlife hospital and is veterinary consultant for British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

The first webinar on November 25 will focus on digestive tract disorders (including dental issues, respiratory disorders and ophthalmic disease). The session on December 2 will look at urinary disorders, neurological and musculoskeletal disorders, and dermatological diseases.

Carol Morgan, Brand Manager at Dechra Veterinary Products, said: “As small mammals such as rats, mice and guinea pigs become more popular, not only with children but also with many adults, general vet practices have to increasingly deal with a wide variety of their everyday ailments.

“While many problems can originate from suboptimal husbandry it is vital that the practice is confident in providing appropriate medical and surgical treatments. These webinars will be live and interactive and are designed to complement each other with the issues they cover.”
