Humanimal Trust, the charity founded in 2014 by orthopaedic-neuro veterinary surgeon, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, has become the newest member of the pan-European animal advocacy organisation, Eurogroup for Animals.

The Trust joins over 80 animal protection organisations from across the UK, EU, Switzerland, Serbia, Norway and Australia, including the RSPCA, World Animal Protection and Four Paws.

As the only organisation in the UK with the sole and specific purpose of progressing One Medicine, Humanimal Trust is ideally placed to join others in providing authoritative advice to help improve animal welfare standards.

Joe Bailey, CEO of Humanimal Trust, said: “We are absolutely delighted to join Eurogroup for Animals and can’t wait to unite with our fellow members to improve the lives of animals not just in the UK, but across Europe and beyond. Earlier this week, we marked World Day for Animals in Laboratories, a day dedicated to the millions of animals around the world who suffer in laboratories. We strongly believe that medical advances shouldn't just be about human benefit when they could help animals too.

“Humans and animals can, and should, benefit from equal and sustainable medical progress, without causing harm, suffering or the loss of an animal's life during experimentation. We believe this One Medicine approach will lead to progressively fewer laboratory animal tests until one day they become obsolete. We look forward to working with Eurogroup for Animals to bring about an end to the harmful use of animals in human and veterinary medical research and education, and replace it with humane alternatives.”

Reineke Hameleers, CEO of Eurogroup for Animals, said: “We're thrilled to welcome Humanimal Trust to the Eurogroup for Animals network and look forward to starting our collaboration which will benefit the millions of animals used for scientific purposes. It's also vital to keep building bridges between the EU and UK since animal protection has no borders.

“With the recent ECI Save Cruelty Free Cosmetics, the welfare of these animals has gained momentum at the EU level, and we know that a positive outcome could have an impact at the global level too. With a strong network of animal advocates working together we can deliver real change, and Humanimal Trust adds a competent and strong voice to our already vibrant movement.”

Humanimal Trust will host the first in a series of free monthly webinars on 5 May, exploring the links between humans and animals, and the importance of One Medicine. Speakers will range from academics and scientists to practitioners and professionals from across the fields of human and animal medicine, and the series will culminate in a live event on 6 May 2024 – One Medicine Day – to celebrate the Trust’s 10th anniversary.
