A beloved family dog was left near collapse with pain and fatigue after a grass seed lodged itself in the muscles of her spine.

Four-year-old Hungarian Vizsla Lola was rushed to Linnaeus-owned London Vet Specialists (LVS) in Hammersmith. The only clue as to what might be affecting her was a history of breathing abnormalities a few weeks prior.

She was seen by head of soft tissue surgery Janet McClaran, who worked with the hospital’s specialist imaging department to carry out a CT scan of her system to try and pinpoint the location of her pain.

They found a surprise on the scan – there was an abscess with a grass seed lodged next to Lola’s spine.

It is thought the seed had been inhaled around two weeks previously, moving itself through the lung to her back.

Owner Rakesh Narayana, from West London, said: “We had been for a long run and when we got back Lola was panting excessively for several hours, which we assumed was due to the heat as it was a warm day.

“When she refused to eat dinner, we knew something was wrong as she absolutely loves her food.

“We were referred to London Vet Specialists who discovered the grass seed, which had caused an abscess, and they operated to remove the seed.”

Janet, an American and European board-certified surgery specialist at LVS, carried out the operation with help from the diagnostic imaging team at London’s newest and largest animal hospital, which opened earlier this year.

She said: “An ultrasound was used during the surgery to locate the deeply embedded grass seed which we then safely removed. Lola had likely inhaled the seed which then migrated through her lungs into the spine muscles.

“We are happy that after some rest and antibiotics to clear any infection, Lola is back to her bouncy self.”

Rakesh said he is delighted to have Lola back to normal and enjoying her favourite food again.

He added: “She is fully recovered and I can’t say thank you enough to London Vet Specialists. They are a lovely team with incredible vets.

“They were extremely helpful, supportive and kind to Lola and helped us make the right choices and provided lots of support and information.

“The new hospital is incredible and we are so lucky to have this facility close to our home.”
